Working with DevOps at

Not too long ago, a very ambitious website SlotCatalog got in touch with me to help them with their budding project. The job was huge and expansive, but my skills in DevOps perfectly suited the task ahead. Given that I was already an AWS Certified DevOps Engineer to the Professional level of certification, I knew that the deployment of the development practices of DevOps would enable SlotCatalog to reach its lofty goals and allow them to continue to grow.

What’s so special about DevOps?

DevOps has become a very popular practice for software development as it shortens the development cycle by combining information technology operations with software development. Using this method enables the developer to deliver fixes, new features, and frequent updates to keep the software in line with the business’ new or altered objectives.

The DevOps model allows development and operations to merge and use practices which automate formerly slow and manual processes, enabling speedier yet reliable evolution. There are many benefits of using DevOps, such as the speed at which developers and operations teams can innovate to adapt to changes in the market and enable efficient growth, as well as the frequency and pace at which these evolutions can be delivered. DevOps is also perfectly suited to operating and managing the development process and infrastructure at scale with efficiency and relative ease.

The SlotCatalog project

The founders of SlotCatalog recognised very early on that casino gaming should be treated with the same respect as traditional forms of gaming, and that players continue to seek more information about games, particularly slot games, as the only real insights that most players get were the short bios beside some games or through word of mouth.

SlotCatalog identified a hole in the market, seeing that there wasn’t a helpful or informative resource for slot gamers in existence. Slot gaming is immensely popular, and there are tens of thousands of games across the online casino scene, with many more released every single week to deliver the renewed appeal to gamers; so the desire to create a comprehensive and helpful database of slot games entailed a huge project which needed to continue to develop.

It wasn’t enough to simply name each slot available and divulge its volatility and return to player (RTP) percentage as SlotCatalog wanted to build a comprehensive catalogue of online slot games to help gamers pick the next slot to play. To do this, they decided that the best method was to be objective and utilise the methods of the hundreds of online casinos to their advantage to provide a rankings system.

Online casinos are set up with game lobbies which host all of their slot games in one section. To appeal to players quickly, they put the most popular and the newest games at the top of these game lobbies. So, SlotCatalog decided to use this as the basis for their rankings system, crawling across hundreds and hundreds of websites to establish the average placement of each slot game. As of early 2019, we cover over 11,000 slot games from over 200 different game developers and crawl for data across over 1,100 online casinos. It is worth to mention that this ranking spans over several different geographical regions, with individual stats and content for 23 languages. This means that we also have data for Japanese slot games and German online casinos.

With the system of delivering key and hard-to-find information on slot games in place, as well as their constantly-updating rankings system, SlotCatalog decided to expand to deliver even more useful information to online casino gamers to offer a full service of sorts. For this, they needed to expand into other areas and host online casino reviews, information about game providers, and present the thousands of casino bonuses available online but in an easy-to-view way. Now, their casino bonuses section has many sorting options, which allow players to find the types of bonuses that they want, such as no-deposit offers.

Given the scale of the project, SlotCatalog’s intention to continue to grow and develop to offer new features, and the ever-changing nature of the world of online casino gaming, using DevOps was integral to creating software that suited the client. Now, the website boasts the most comprehensive slot catalogue in the world, all of the information, images, and sometimes videos that players could want about the latest games and a huge range of older games, and they’ve compiled other key elements of online casino gaming to help players see all of the options available and make the best choices.
